After pick up in Quito you wil be driven directly to Tandayapa Bird Lodge, a world famous birding lodge, known for its handsome collection of hummingbirds at their balcony feeders, where species like Violet-tailed Sylph, Booted Racket-tail and Purple-throated Woodstar regulary visit in numbers. The lodge is a joy for birders and also people who like to take good bird photographs of these birds also. There are often a dozen species of hummingbird present and hundreds of individuals. We will guide you through multiflash techniques to get the very best flight photos of these hummingbirds. There are also fruit feeders at this cloudforest lodge too, with an assortment of tanagers that and are sometimes joined by toucans or motmots too! A traditional Ecuadorian meal will be provided for lunch by the lodge’s resident chef, and accomanied by a tasty Andean soup and fresh, tropical fruit juice. In the mid afternoon (around 4pm) you will depart for Quito, arriving at around 6pm.

Other birds could also include Toucan Barbet as well as a rich range of hummingbirds, including some species only likely there on this tour, like Gorgeted Sunangel and the gorgeous Velvet-urple Coronet. We will take a boxed lunch from the lodge, to allow us to move from there to another bnearby feeder site to photograph yet more Technicolor tanagers and more! Dinner and Night wil be at Tandayapa Bird Lodge again, where we might get a night visit from a Kinkajou or an olingo.

Day 4: Refugio Paz de las Aves to Quito.

This unique cloudforest reserve will offer something both special and different from the cloudforests covered earlier. The reserve and its owners have various features of interest to photographers. They have managed to habituate some shy wild birds, and provide good opportunities to photograph these. Much of the morning will be spent there, before returning to Tandayapa for packing up, some final shots, and to depart to Quito. The day will start at the cock-of-the-rock blind where these shocking scarlet birds often display just after dawn. Following that, one of the local guides will lead us to some forest feeding areas, to try and photograph species like Giant, Yellow-breasted and Ochre-breasted Antpittas and Dark-backed Wood-Quail. There are also superb feeders on site, which regularly attract species like Toucan Barbet, Black-capped and Flame-faced Tanagers and sometimes too Black-chinned Mountain-Tanagers. Breakfast will be taken at Tandayapa Bird Lodge, and the visit to Paz de las Aves includes a mid-morning heart brunch too. A late Lunch will be taken at Tandayapa before departure. We will depart around 4pm, arriving in Quito at around 6pm.

Day 4: Mashpi Amagusa.

The day will be spent at a very special place about a 90 minute drive from Tandayapa. In the rich, wet subtropical cldouforess lies the reserve of Amagusa, near the birding area of Mashpi. The reserve comes with feeders and bananas, which offer up some spectacular birds only possible by visiting this place. Some of the exciting birds we may photograph on this day include the fabulous Glistening-green Tanager, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Moss-backed Tanager, as well as Rose-faced Parrot. The hummingbird photo opps on site are also good with Green Thorntails, Brown Incas, and Empress Brilliants all regulars on site. Breakfast will be taken at Tandayapa Bird Lodge, lunch will be a Boxed Lunch on site by the feeders at Mashpi, and Dinner and the night will be take at Tandayapa again.
