Since Tandayapa Bird Lodge opened in 2000, thirty-one species of hummingbird have been recorded on the property, with 12–20 species occurring daily and up to a hundred individuals present at any one time. It is one of the must-see bird spectacles in the world. The hummingbirds are usually present all day long, but the greatest numbers appear on wet afternoons, especially in the last half-hour before dusk as they fill up on energy to last the night. Numbers of species and individuals are lowest in the middle of the dry season (July and August). Check out this amazing video of a typical day at the feeders!
The birds allow very close approach, and over a few days you will soon come to grips with the species, which can be overwhelming at first. This online guide will help you prepare.
